Have you ever had an episode with your child where it feels like you are interrogating a criminal: they give the classic ‘deny, deny, deny’ responses? Typically, questions like, ‘Remember we did this last week?’ and they say,’ Honestly, I have NEVER seen this thing in my entire life. You NEVER taught me!’ And that makes you wonder, should I do more in my homeschooling?
Well, if you have been there don’t worry, you are not alone; I have experienced this too! Children tend to exaggerate when they have forgotten, or when they are just hungry, or when they are upset😁. It’s not unusual to get accusations like, ‘You NEVER play with me!’ after finishing a game, but aren’t game enough for another round or a new one altogether.
Given, feelings of inadequacy may pop up here and there. Because looking at your child and what her peers can do, and they can’t, you start thinking, should I do more in my homeschooling? But wait, they may be peers but they develop differently. Also remember, slow doesn’t mean stupid. Your child will catch up. It’s also true that shortcomings are magnified in our eyes, and you fail to applaud what they are good at that others may be struggling with.
Some days are better than others in homeschooling. It may seem you haven’t done much but believe me, it’s not that bad. You have taught them organization, responsibility, empathy, team-work, and independence- to name just a few- which things you can NEVER quantify. For all other things, workbooks may give you an indication of your progress. Don’t doubt yourself, you are adequately equipped to homeschool and are more than capable of providing the safest environment to foster a love for learning for your child.
Free resources to supplement your homeschooling
There is always something more you can do in your homeschooling. There are so many resources out there that can help you and your child enjoy the journey. I have seen that a printer is an invaluable gadget to own, it makes things easier.
One of the most comprehensive lists of free resources I ever came across was on Facebook on this link. It is grouped according to subject content, with links to the different websites.
Most of the extra resources I use and books I buy are from these community groups. I have found a sense of belonging within these communities and would highly recommend joining such groups for inspiration and ideas.
I was one of those moms who struggled with crafts until a friend recommended truewaykids.com. It makes bible stories more interesting. Another fantastic website is myplacewithjesus.com. Pinterest is also another wonderful place to get ideas. There are so many other websites I may not be aware of that you probably do, and I greatly appreciate your feedback on this.
