Being consistent is defined as ‘marked by harmony, regularity, or steady continuity : free from variation or contradiction’ according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. It is the one key ingredient that is needed in almost everything: from rearing our children and to better one’s self. In this post I am going to share about the amazing power of consistency.
Children thrive when we are consistent
Children need structure in their day. A routine makes them better able to anticipate the next step. That predictability gives them security. There is a dependability associated with being consistent. In our homeschool I have often been reminded of what I forgot to do by the kids, even though I would have planned to skip that particular activity ๐. My daughter often asks for us to do school if we go for a couple of days on a break. She is used to these daily activities.
Children will constantly test boundaries to see how far they can go with something and get away with it. That is because we vary how we deal with a certain issue, once you are consistent they will move to the next challenge. Discipline is one area that needs being consistent. Yes, justice and mercy can hold hands here, you don’t always have to be harsh to get the lesson across, choose kindness but be firm.
Self-improvement demands consistency
Taking the first step in a good habit is always something to be applauded. But most of us lose steam as we go. People are all hyped about new year’s resolutions at the beginning of the year, but by the end of the first quarter only a few will be holding on. I remember very well someone telling the story of a gym fanatic who takes a break from January to March. Her reason being the place is full of ‘fakes’ who will eventually stop going, and then she resumes her routine.
Whenever you have purposed in your heart to do something, be sure to harness the amazing power of consistency. Set a reminder on your phone, write it down, use sticky notes to remind you; whatever you do, keep moving. Never give up, even when you feel discouraged. Sometimes you may feel no motivation but you just have to soldier on.
Moving at least one step means that you have put in some effort, you are not where you want to be but it’s certainly not where you were yesterday. Every step counts, no matter how small. When acts are repeated, they form habits, and habits will determine your character. It is by following through these hard tasks that you get the most satisfaction! Discipline, as seen in consistency, is a character quality that is noble and admirable.
