The birth of the homeschool idea to us

The year is 2014, David and I are fresh from exchanging our wedding vows the previous year. With a twinkle in our eyes, we envision little feet running around, and our home filled with sweet chuckles, and cries, and dirty diapers! But not just yet, we are hard on the grind with our PhDs in Jeonju, South Korea. The hours are long and the journey arduous, and so no time, and family to assist. But as we go, thoughts of a family in the by and by come, and we do a bit of research on how best to raise one. And along with that, the birth of the homeschool idea to us.

David and I about to start ‘real’ school

In the process, we come across this promo video, on schooling. A voice inside me said, “I am going to homeschool my kids.” How I would do it or for how long, I didn’t know (who knows the future, right?). I sounded-out the idea to some people whose opinion I valued, looking for affirmation, then BOOM! I really got discouraged. Oh well, you live and learn. However, I was walking with David in this and the two of us were agreed, and that is what mattered the most.

Fast forward to 2020 and yes, you guessed right, Covid-19 happens! By then we had two little ones, the elder 4 years, and the younger, 2. Decisions on where and how to go about the schooling business had begun. Now I could talk about homeschooling without taking out a shield and helmet, hallelujah! Around the same time, we had invested in immigrating to Canada from Zimbabwe, where we were now based. School meant a commitment to buying uniforms and books, paying tuition and other fees. We were waiting for the response and we were wondering what if we get the response before the term ends or before she starts? That meant taking her out soon and losing our precious, hard-earned money.

And that is how the birth of the homeschool idea to us began. I am going to share how that has been, the ups and downs and the lessons we are still learning, so do come again for that.
